Education

The NBTC promotes the education of all staff involved in transfusion across all the regions of England. Working in collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), they provide education events (virtual and face to face), resources, and tools supporting the safe and appropriate use of blood components. Details of these and how to access them can be found in these education pages. Additional relevant resources can be found produced by the NHSBT Patient Blood Management (PBM) Team and Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT).

NBTC Rolling Programme

NBTC Rolling National Transfusion Education Programme

In Autumn 2023, the NBTC approved a proposal for Regional Transfusion Committees (RTC) to work together to produce a rolling National programme of virtual transfusion education sessions. The programme runs from April to April and sees 7 education sessions delivered, one topic for each RTC.

All sessions are free of charge, open to all, accessible nationally and delivered virtually.  The sessions are relevant to both clinical and laboratory staff, with the EdWG keen to encourage ‘shopfloor’ healthcare professionals to attend (not just members of the hospital transfusion team).  Topics classically address

  • Patient blood management (PBM) in practice and/or
  • Transfusion safety

Events are advertised on the NBTC website and cascaded via local communications.  The previous years’ core topics can be found on the Documents and Resources for Education webpage. Recordings are often made and can be found on the PBM YouTube webpage.

Attendance, feedback & updates to evidence-based-practice help guide topics for the coming year. If you have any comments or suggestions in this regard, please email deborah.booth@nhsbt.nhs.uk.

Additional national educational events are hosted by the Blood transfusion education and discussion group (BTEDG), by NBTC working groups, and individual RTCs may choose to run additional sessions in their region. In 2026 there are due to be events hosted by the emergency planning working group, haematology and trauma group, and the education working group. These events will be advertised on the Events for Education NBTC page.
