Scientific and clinical education and training including development of the consultant clinical scientist role

Project leads: Tom Bullock, Interim Chief Scientific Officer, NHSBT / Jill Caulfield, Education Development Lead T2024

Projects included within this deliverable have been designed to identify knowledge gaps within our Biomedical Scientist workforce, at both the laboratory and undergraduate degree level. Only by understanding these gaps can we begin to offer improvements to build confidence in our workforce and increase transfusion laboratory safety.

Project S1 - Training and knowledge needs/gap analysis - A survey was circulated to hospital laboratory staff to gain an understanding of what the current knowledge gaps are, what barriers prevent laboratory staff from accessing or attending training currently offered and what would be the preferred method of delivery as well as the preferred duration. The results from the survey can be found in the updates section.

Project S2 - Review of transfusion content in undergraduate provision - A survey was circulated to all lecturers responsible for delivering transfusion content on IBMS accredited undergraduate Biomedical Science degree courses. The survey focused on the delivery of content, time dedicated to teaching and the actual content taught in an effort to identify any standardisation across the universities. The results of the survey can be found in the updates section.

Project CS1 - Produce a 'one stop shop' of transfusion resources - This project focused on the development of a webpage to house and signpost good quality transfusion education resources, all in one handy place. This project was responsible for the Transfusion Training Hub, located within this website. https://nationalbloodtransfusion.co.uk/transfusion-training-hub
