On behalf of the SHOT Team and SCRIPT Group:

The Essential standards for safe transfusion in clinical IT systems (Version 1.0, June 2026) have been published.

These standards define the essential safety requirements for IT systems that support safety critical transfusion workflows, including patient identification, sample labelling, ordering, administration, and traceability.

They are intended to support system suppliers, healthcare organisations, and transfusion teams in delivering safe and effective digital transfusion pathways.

The standards have been endorsed by all the transfusion committees across the UK.

You can access the standards here:

This document is owned and published by the SHOT Team and SCRIPT group.

Support in promoting and signposting these standards through networks and organisations is encouraged to maximise awareness and adoption across the UK.
